Thou spreadst a table in my sight;
Thine unction grace bestoweth;
And, O! what transports of delight
From Thy pure chalice floweth!
He feeds me.
He anoints me with grace.
He gives me to drink from the river of His delights.
Among our wedding gifts is a cutting board bearing Psalm 34:8: “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!”
I display it in our kitchen, and I reckon it no accident that God made food with such variety in flavor, texture, color, scent. Oh, yes, He means to delight us here: common grace to us dust-made creatures. But that is only part of it. He also means to point us to delights yet to come: special grace to us heaven-bound souls.
If you, then, being evil, He seems to whisper, know how to spread good tables for your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven . . . .?
He bids us come, thirsty ones, to His waters; He bids us, poverty-stricken, come buy and eat what is good.
For Christ has declared Himself to be the Bread of life; whoever comes to this table shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Him shall never thirst.
