The Happy Mondays

*The option to have my alarm make gentle noises instead of blare at me.

*The patience of morning traffic in the rain.

*A black dog who grinned at all passing cars as if all contained friends.

*Someone with an umbrella striped like an American flag.

*The perfect atmosphere for reading Poe’s “The Raven” aloud to a nine a.m. class of college students.

*The realization that most of today’s college students do not recognize “barrel organ” as a humorous option on a multiple choice quiz and may very well select it for its seeming obscurity.

*Girls in rubber boots and raincoats.

*Something pink in bloom.

*Friends who appear just when I begin to be lonesome.

*Stories to be read over hot tea.

*Things to hope for and a God who — do you remember? — names Himself “the God of hope.”
